An evening’s celebration to acknowledge, reward and remember those journalists around the world working out of the spotlight to report on the world’s crises, conflicts and challenges, hosted by Christiane Amanpour (CNN). Followed by a panel discussion: With technology forcing huge changes in the media and will the future belong to local and freelance journalists?
The Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism were set up to recognise the best of local and freelance reporters who make such a critical contribution, but whose work is often overlooked.
A panel of judges comprising Isobel Hilton of OpenDemocracy.net, Saira Shah, writer and broadcaster, Lionel Barber, editor of the Financial Times; Roger Cohen of the International Herald Tribune and Peter Maas of the New York Times Magazine will shortly be announcing the two joint winners of this year’s awards. The awards were established in memory of Kurt Schork, the widely-admired journalist killed in Sierra Leone on assignment for Reuters.
As well as receiving a cash prize of $5,000 each, the winners will join Paul Eedle (Out There News), David Dunkley Gyimah (Viewmagazine.tv) and Nazenin Ansari (Kayhan newspaper) to discuss the current and future role of local and freelance reporting in global newsgathering as traditional media outlets and practices come under increasing pressure from changes in audiences and advertising markets.
The event is hosted by Christiane Amanpour of CNN and the Kurt Schork Memorial Fund Advisory Board.
