By Dr. Sandy Steacy, Geophysics research Group, University of Ulster
And Prof. Geoff King, Institut de Physique du Globe, Paris
If you think that the two very large earthquakes of December ‘04 and March ‘05 off the Sumatra coast have reduced the risks of future such events, think again…
This seminar will be the opportunity to learn about the latest scientific approaches used today to know where and when such disasters might happen.
Listen how computer simulations of earthquakes could model the heights and energies of future potential tsunamis in the region and learn how satellite images, Supernova Cosmic rays and GPS, together with historical studies and marine surveys can give us new insights into earthquake behaviour over time.
Taken together, can these perspectives save millions of lives in the future?
