Lives of Animals Lecture series
The American philosopher Stanley Cavell suggestively characterises traditional philosophy as a 'rejection of the human', and he conceives the corrective task as requiring a retrieval of 'the human animal'. But if our tradition has tended to lose sight of the animal condition of human life how much more has it neglected to take regard of animal lives that are not human. In this series of public lectures we will be exploring the ways in which our thinking in general, and our thinking in ethics in particular, has been shaped by this neglect - and to consider ways in which we might begin to respond more responsibly to the lives of animals.
